Fundamental technique includes approach, arm swing and hand contact; blocking mechanics include footwork, proper jumping and landing, timing and execution. Hitter Camp: Become a terminator on your team in no time flat, with proper arm swing, hand contact and footwork to the ball. From the beginner to the advanced, every player will learn to become a better attacker. Hitter camps teach all the elements of a strong attack and will make you a confident hitter from your desired position. Expert advice for middles, outsides and right sides will polish your game and take it to the next level. Learn how to score against a double block and improve your timing for two's, slides, shoots and quick sets. Combinations, back-row attacks and blocking will also be covered in this intensive three-day camp.

Are You Ready for an Olympic Summer?

USA...USA...USA!

April 18 marked 100 days to the 2012 London Olympic Games, and for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Teams, the Journey to London Begins in Anaheim!

The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team, ranked No. 1 in the world by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), will hold two intrasquad scrimmages in May as the team prepares for the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix. The women will then host Bulgaria in a series of friendly exhibition matches in Southern California prior to departure for the Olympic Games. The City of Anaheim, the official host city for both the U.S. Women’s and Men’s National Volleyball Teams, will serve as host for the first of three exhibition matches with Bulgaria.

All camps will be hosted at this full service club on Wilcrest Drive in West Houston, conveniently located just off Beltway 8. Sessions begin on June 11 and extend a full two weeks into August this year, through Friday, August 17. Now everyone can find time to catch up on their training with the expanded schedule of camps. Welcome to the Sokol Volleyball newsletter of upcoming events! We are very excited to announce our 2012 slate of camps, which will begin on June 11 and run through August 17. We want you to join us for a great summer at Westside Tennis and Fitness, our new camp home. The club has beautiful amenities and our camp staff is eagar to dive into another summer of training players.

Sokol Volleyball is in its 29th year and we are gearing up for an Olympic Summer as you know. The U.S. women have qualified and will be in London. Our new design commemorates this special event and you can only get one by registering for camp - shirts are limited as are spaces in our new facility so don't delay. And, if you register by June 11, we will waive any late fees and you will save, save, save! See a sampling of our 2012 camp events below or see the full version.

Sokol Volleyball has one more week of camp offerings for the 2011 season! If you have not started your pre-season yet and would like to get a refresher course, sign up for Skills I or II this coming Monday, Aug 8-11. We are going to cover all the skills including hitting, serving, passing, setting and defense. Let us get you ready for the Fall and give you some pointers on how to stand out at your tryouts!

Remember that once you start playing, you will want to keep your hitting rhythm in tune with weekly group lessons. We have had much success over the years with small doses of training on a constant basis. Our hitters have some of the best arm swings and approaches in the city! We are always available to help you become better. Good luck to you!

Sokol Volleyball coaches and campers all had a great time at Westside Tennis Club during our first week of Skills I and Hitter camps. Lots of training, playing and of course, FUN! We are looking forward to spending the rest of the summer there at The Zone. If you haven't signed up for a camp yet, get your registration completed before the spots fill up! July is popular, as is early August. Many players are eager to brush up before school season. Most camps still have space available. Want one of those cute little bears up there? Bring a buddy to camp this summer and you can take one home with you!

Are you ready for club tryouts? Are you looking for a new club? Check out the press release that follows and see what Coach Sokol has been up to!

Starting tomorrow, June 20, is Skills II and Hitter Camp. These camps are perfect for the average 8th grader or any high school player. All of our campers are grouped by age and ability, so small groups are compatible. After the skills sessions are complete, the campers compete for awards and tournament medals on Thursday in Skills II. Campers in the Hitter session will be learning all about the attack, tempos, footwork and set selections, hitting live sets from our college setters! Wow, what could be more fun!

Every Monday and Wednesday from 7-8 pm at Bellaire High School, Coach Sokol and Coach Clarke conduct group hitting and serving lessons. Everyone is welcome to attend. Simply call ahead to make a reservation and bring $35 for your one-hour lesson. Group size varies, but the ratio is usually 6:1 or better on most nights. Practice, practice, practice!!!!!

Private Lessons are available from Coach Sokol. Just released is her July-August training calendar which features select days / hours of availability at both Westside Tennis Club and Bellaire High School on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Save $25 on all multi-day camps until June 1. Hurry because time is running out on your discount period. All camps will have a price increase on June 1, so you have just one more week to take advantage of our great pre-season camp prices. A sample of the first half of our schedule is included below. For a complete listing of all camps, please see our summer calendar where you can find camps, clinics and group lessons all in one convenient place.

If you are a young player in the 4th-8th grades, we recommend a grouping of camps to maximize your experience. Consider signing up for a Skills Camp, Hitter Camp and Serve-Pass Clinic this summer. This combination will certainly get you prepared for August tryouts and beyond. If you are really serious about improving your skills, commit to a weekly Hitting Lesson on top of your camp training. Repetition is the key to success in any sport, and lessons will give you those extra reps and the edge you need.

If you are an advanced player in high school, we recommend a grouping of camps that will challenge an experienced player. Consider signing up for Competitiion Camp, Libero Clinic and a Position Camp of your choice. This combination will target your training a bit more and push you to learn a specific position. If you are really serious about improving your skills, commit to a weekly Hitting Lesson or semi-private training with Coach Sokol. One on one training is also available for the truly dedicated athlete.

Sokol Named Director of Training at Westside

Debbie Sokol will take over operations of training and directing the athletes at Westside's volleyball club. She will be responsible for practice planning and execution, tryouts and staffing. Sokol brings a wealth of experience to the position and plans to build on a very successful members-only concept. All interested players are encouraged to tryout on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at The Zone, inside Westside Tennis Club at 1200 Wilcrest.

Sokol will be bringing in two long-time associates to join her in club operations. Ap Clarke, the 10x District winner and Coach of the Year from Bellaire High School will be the Associate Training Director and John Turner, who coached his teams to play-offs 22 of the last 24 years at Pearland, will be the new Director of Coaches. With this great trio re-united, Westside players will have plenty of top-notch instruction.

Teams will be fielded in the 12U, 13U, 14U, 15U, 16U, 17U and 18U. Practice nights will be Tuesday and Thursday beginning late afternoon and finishing by 9:00 pm. Schedules and additional staff are in the works and will be completed as soon as possible.

Skills Camps: Individual training combined with team concepts will get you in shape for your next season! These skills camps are designed to focus on all aspects of the game with an emphasis on fundamentals. Skills will be reinforced through repetition and performed in competition. Players may take instruction in a Hitting and Serving Lesson any time of year by booking an appointment via email or phone. Hitting / Serving lessons include training of footwork, arm-swing and hand contact as well as serving instruction. Lessons may not be purchased online.
